CRASH OF A BRISTOL BEAUFORT
NEAR LAKE VICTORIA, LAKES ENTRANCE
ON 2 OCTOBER 1942

visits since 16 July 2000

RAAF Mark VI Bristol Beaufort, A9-61, made a forced landing at Lake Victoria near Lakes Entrance on 2 October 1942 after hitting the mast at Bengwarden Masthead Bombing Range.

The crew of this aircraft were as follows:-

P/O J.P. Legge (Pilot)
P/O L.C. Andrews
Sgt. D. Marshall

There were no injuries.

This aircraft was originally delivered to the RAAF in June 1942.

Flight Lieutenant Ley and Sergeant Lee of 26 Repair and Salvage Unit RAAF departed Laverton for Lake Victoria via Bairnsdale to inspect the crashed Beaufort. As a result of this inspection, Sgt. Lee later left Laverton with 14 airmen to salvage Beaufort A9-61. The task was completed by 22 October 1942. It was converted to components after the accident.
