CRUISER BERTHS, BRISBANE RIVER, BRISBANE, QLD
USED BY ALLIED MILITARY SHIPS DURING WW2

visits since 29 December 2006

Allied military ships used the various Cruiser Berths along the Brisbane River during WW2. There were Cruiser Berths at Murrarie and Gibson Island. They were in the shape of a Tee with a single leg coming out from the river bank.

The Cruiser Berth at Murrarie has long since disappeared. It was originally located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River almost in line with the northern end of Metroplex Avenue which runs down to the river from the large Queensland Newspapers building on the nearby hill. It was located between the Bulk Sugar Terminal (site of the old meatworks) and today's Gateway Bridge. 

During WW2 there were underground RAN Naval Fuel tanks in the vicinity of the Queensland Newspapers building. Fuel pipes ran down the hill to the Murrarie Cruiser berth.
