Splinter Fleet Hastily built at the start of WW2 to stop German U-boats from taking their toll on Allied shipping, the 110 ft wooden subchasers were the smallest commissioned warships in the US Navy, yet they saw as much action as ships ten times their size. The author spent two years on Subchaser SC-648 in the South West Pacific theatre of war against Japan. For nine months of this period he was the Commanding Officer of SC-648.
