PROUD TO BE THIRD

Formed at Wilson's Promontory, Victoria, No.3 Australian Independent Company was one of eight such units raised during the Second World War, and originally intended to act in a guerilla warfare role.

Within a few days of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the company was ordered to the French colony of New Caledonia in the Pacific where it prepared for a possible Japanese invasion which never occurred.

After six months, the unit returned to Australia and by early 1943 found itself in New Guinea in the midst of the torrid Wau-Salamaua Campaign where it sustained a large number of casualties proportionate to it's small size, though it more than held it's own against larger and more entrenched enemy forces.

Back in Australia late the same year, many months of endless training in North Queensland was followed by a flank protection role for the Seventh Division's assault on Balikpapan, Borneo in mid 1945.

This excellent book details the full history of the Company from its early beginnings right through to the end of the war.

The book comprises 383 pages of Unit History, Personal Recollections of veterans of the 2/3rd, Unit Photographs and a comprehensive Biographical Roll of the more than 800 men who were proud to serve in this unit.
