A20-494 crashed on night takeoff from Mackay on the 4th June 1942. It was flown by J M Davidson and Flt/Sgt Hodges.Both survived.

Here are some pics of A20-494 in the morning. They crashed into the dispersal bay (pic 4) at night. I don't know what happened but A/C had engine trouble on the previous day when leaving Townsville for Cairns.
Sorry about the size of the jpg's but I did'nt want to loose to much detail. I also have a lot of photo's taken by my father and the RAAFfrom North Africa, Bankstown, Townsville, Meraukie and the Pacific islands and Iwakuni (Japan).

The photo's were taken at Mackay. I think the dispersal bay may have been somewhere near the "piano keys" are now, on runway 32. Don't take it as gospel, I just compared the photos with one I took from that position last year.
I have photo's of 86 sqn Kittyhawks in Townville but they are poor quality and are mixed up with ones from Merauke. I may have the negatives --- I'll have to check when I have time.
